What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do is an art of self-defense, the national sport of South Korea and a modern Olympic sport. Millions of people all over the world practice it. In South Korea it is taught in elementary schools, in private schools (Dojang) and in the military. The literal translation of Tae Kwon Do is "The Art of Punching and Kicking." Tae Kwon Do is sometimes referred to as "Korean Karate." Although appearing very similar to Karate, there are some distinct differences, mainly in the area of kicking. The Tae Kwon Do stylist uses punching, blocking, jumping, parrying and dodging along with a vast array of kicks to formulate a system of unarmed self-defense with an emphasis on building a strong moral character. It is a way of training the body and mind together, and its final goal is deep inner peace, built upon confidence, compassion and wisdom.
